Earlier, in 2017, McKayla alleged that the USA Gymnastics team physician Larry Nassar had repeatedly molested her, starting when she was 13 years old until she retired from the sport in 2016.
She made the allegation on Twitter under the #MeToo hashtag. Nassar had been arrested in November 2016 and accused of sexually assaulting female minors throughout his career.
During Nassar’s sentencing hearing, USA Gymnastics waived the agreement, at least temporarily, to allow Maroney to make a victim’s statement in court against Nassar, who is now serving a 40-to-175-year prison sentence.
On May 16, 2018, it was announced that Maroney and the other victims would be awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.
McKayla Maroney’s Revealed The Death Cause Of Her Father Mike Maroney
McKayla Maroney, born on December 12, 1995, revealed in January 2019 that her father, Mike Maroney, died at the age of 59.
The news was announced with a tribute on Instagram. More than one year later, she revealed the cause of death through a series of posts on her official Instagram story.
She posted several videos to provide new information about her father’s death.
McKayla first explained her transition from an Olympic-level athlete to working on her music career.
Then, she provided details about her father. She revealed that her father had been trying to detox in a hotel when he passed away. She posted,
Moreover, she announced that she would use her first song to pay tribute to her father, which would ultimately be compiled into an album.
McKayla’s Mother, Erin Maroney, Also Spoke Against Team USA Gymnastics Physician Larry Nassar
McKayla Maroney’s mother was involved in figure skating and high school sports.
Earlier, when McKayla alleged that the USA Gymnastics team physician Larry Nassar repeatedly assaulted her sexually then, Erin also showed her support.
Erin asked the court to give Nassar the maximum punishment of over 60 years. In Erin’s letter to the judge, she wrote,
She also wrote that she and her husband were prohibited from staying with McKayla while traveling abroad.
Erin noted that when her husband questioned former USA Gymnastics president Steve Penny about the girls’ isolation, Penny allegedly assured them that girls were sage. In the letter, she added,
Erin and McKayla criticized USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University. Erin wrote that the entities “Totally failed” the medal-winning gymnast.
Maroney Grew Up With Her Two Younger Siblings
McKayla Maroney has one younger sister, Tarynn, and one younger brother, Kav Maroney.
Her sister Tarynn, 18, was born on August 27, 2006. She is a 2024 graduate of Wilson High School, where she was a member of Wilson’s 2024 CIF State championship team.
She was also a member of the Wilson relay teams that won the 4*100 and 4*200 at the Oregon Relays, and she was second in the 1600m SMR and fifth in the 800m SMR.
On the other hand, McKayla’s brother Kav, 26, was born on September 24, 1998. He spent the 2018 season as a red-shirt El Camino College football team footballer.
He attended Long Beach Wilson High School, receiving a CIF All-Academic award twice.
While on the track and field team, he was named 1st Team All-Moore League as a senior in the 200 meters.
