Tom Brady Allegedly Destroyed Cellphone to Conceal Messages About Cheating During Deflategate

Tom Brady joked that if the NFL was going to find him guilty no matter what, he would have just taken the money upfront instead of letting them waste resources.

New England Patriots star Tom Brady retired from football in February 2022 after an incredible 22-season career. Many people may think that he is enjoying his life to the fullest.

But he’s feeling sorry for himself lately because he’s not dating anyone and watching his ex-wife, Gisele Bündchen, move on with her new partner, Joaquim Valente.

Highlights

  • In early 2015, the NFL said Tom Brady likely knew about deflating footballs in the AFC Championship Game.
  • NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell upheld Brady’s suspension on July 28, partly due to Brady destroying his cellphone.
  • Judge Richard M. Berman lifted the suspension for the 2015 season, but Brady still had to sit out the first four games of 2016.
  • The Patriots were fined $1 million and lost two draft picks as a part of the penalty.

Tom finalized his divorce from supermodel Gisele Bündchen in October 2022.

The former NFL star quarterback has been married and divorced twice in his life. His first marriage was with actress Bridget Moynahan, and they divorced in 2006.

He then married Bündchen in 2009, and they divorced in 2022. The former NFL star is also the father of three children: Benjamin, Vivian, and Jack.

As reported by OK Magazine, an insider revealed that Brady is feeling a little lonely and sorry for himself as he is not dating anyone.

On the other hand, Gisele Bündchen is expecting her first child with her boyfriend, Joaquim Valente, and is enjoying life. They are currently on holiday in Costa Rica with their kids.

Tom Brady often makes headlines for his personal life, marriages, and divorces.

However, there was a time when his professional career was at the center of controversy due to the Deflategate saga, which led to his suspension.

Tom Brady Denied Cheating During The Deflategate Scandal

On 6 May 2015, the NFL released a long report about the deflation of footballs during the AFC Championship Game against the Indianapolis Colts on 18 January 2015.

Deflategate refers to reducing the air pressure in footballs, making them softer and easier to grip, throw, and catch.

And the NFL suspected Brady was benefiting from this illegal advantage. As per ESPN, he loved to grip softer balls.

On 11 May of the same year, the NFL suspended Tom Brady for four games for his involvement, citing “substantial and credible evidence.”

Moreover, NFL Executive Vice President Troy Vincent wrote to Brady, saying that his actions were damaging to the integrity and public confidence in the game of football.

On 14 May, Brady and the NFL Players Association appealed the suspension.

However, on 28 July NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell upheld the suspension, pointing out Brady’s destruction of his cellphone as a significant factor in his decision.

The NFL sought to confirm Goodell’s decision in federal court, and Brady allowed the NFLPA to appeal in federal court and also expressed his disappointment on Facebook.

Opinions on the punishment varied, with some agreeing it was harsh but deserved, while others thought it was fair.

On 3 September, Judge Richard M. Berman overturned Brady’s suspension, allowing him to play the first four games of the 2015 season.

He criticized the NFL for not providing Brady with proper notice of the charges and potential suspension.

However, Brady was eventually suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season as a result of the ongoing fallout from the Deflategate scandal.

Additionally, the New England Patriots were fined $1 million and lost two draft picks.

Tom Brady consistently denied all the accusations against him. He said, “I didn’t change the footballs in any way.”

In February 2022, sportswriter Mike Florio revealed that the NFL had falsified data and hid information that could have cleared Brady and the Patriots.

He explained that NFL executives had jumped to conclusions about the air pressure in the Patriots’ footballs, which were actually within the expected range.

As reported by ESPN, some thought it was just a minor rule violation that didn’t affect the Patriots’ Super Bowl win.

Others felt it was an unfair attempt to target both a top team and Tom Brady, based on flimsy evidence.

The NFL’s standard for punishment only required that the event was “more likely than not” to have happened.
